Less Salt Equals Lower BP

A new study shows that the more you lower your sodium intake, the lower your blood pressure will be.

Researchers participating in the DASH-sodium study have found reduced sodium intake combined with the DASH diet substantially lowers blood pressure in people with high blood pressure. The DASH diet, which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, is high in fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy, and low in fat. Participants in the study were assigned to follow either the DASH diet or a typical American diet.
Researchers found lower sodium intake resulted in lower blood pressures for participants on both diets. This held true for men, women, African Americans, whites and those with and without high blood pressure. The lowest blood pressure readings were found in those with sodium intake levels much lower than the currently recommended maximum of 2,400 mg a day while also eating the DASH diet.
