Eye Makeup And Contact Lenses
15 Ways to Avoid Problems
Eye makeup is one of the most common but least suspected sources of problems for contact lens wearers. Misuse of products and reactions to ingredients used in makeup have been responsible for soiled lenses, eye irritation, allergy, dryness, injury and infection. The American Academy of Ophthalmology offers 15 ways you can avoid problems related to the use of eye makeup and contact lens wear.
1.Use cosmetics labeled hypoallergenic, for contact lens wearers, or for sensitive eyes.
2.Avoid cheap or unknown brands of eye makeup.
3.Wash hands thoroughly with a non-additive soap before handling your lenses.
4.Apply makeup after inserting lenses.
5.Remove lenses before removing makeup.
6.Avoid creamy or oily makeup or makeup remover.
7.Use soft pencil eyeliners and apply outside the lash line.
8.Use waterbased, water-resistant mascara (not waterproof).
9.Use pressed powder eyeshadows rather than creams.
10.Never share cosmetics or applicator brushes.
11.Replace eyeliner, mascara and mascara brushes every three months.
12.Don’t expose cosmetics to heat.
13.Never apply eye makeup when you are in motion.
14.Don’t use water or saliva to lubricate applicator or thin cosmetics.
15.Don’t apply cosmetics or wear contact lenses if your eyes are red, swollen or infected. See your eye doctor if symptoms persist.
