The Causes of Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry Eye Syndrome affects approximately one out of every five Americans. This is an astonishing number and it is on the rise. There are several factors that contribute to Dry Eye Syndrome:

Age: Seventy-Five percent of people over 65 years of age have been affected by Dry Eye Syndrome.

Hormonal Changes: Women can experience Dry Eyesyndrome brought on by pregnancy, lactation, oral contraception, menstruation and menopause.

Diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, thyroid complications, asthma, cataracts, glaucoma and lupus can result in side effects of Dry Eye.

Medications can also lead to Dry Eye Syndrome as a side effect. Some of these medications include antidepressants, antihistamines, diuretics and tranquilizers.

Contact lenses discomfort is most often due to dry eye. Soft lenses draw alot of the tears away form the eye resulting in dry, irritated eyes.

Other conditions such as heat, air pollution, smoke, lights and wind can rob the eye from it s tears leaving the eye dry.
