Americans are the largest group of contact lens users worldwide

An estimated 80 million people in the world use contact lenses;

some 33 million in the U.S. alone. As in many other categories, Americans are also at the top of the list of contact lens users. Modern short wear lens systems are acquiring an ever larger share of the market. In addition, experts say we can expect to see further development and improvement in contact lens materials. Consumers will thus be able to enjoy even greater comfort in the future. The market share of disposable lens systems with varying change intervals is continuously growing. It is estimated that approximately 5 percent of contact lenses in the U.S. are one day lenses, while approximately 40 percent of all lenses distributed can be classified as one or two week systems. One fourth of all contact lens users choose lenses that you change once a month or more. Only 30 percent fall back on so-called traditional, conventional contact lenses. This means that the market has undergone a decisive change over the past few years. Special, soft lenses such as colored contact lenses have also enjoyed growing market shares, however. It is the consumer in particular who benefits from the improved contact lens materials. Comfort is significantly improved through materials that cause less drying, are antimicrobial and have a deposit resistant surface. © Biermann Medical New 17/03/2000
