Direct Sunlight Exposure Found to be Associated with Developing Cataracts

Exposure to direct sunlight, especially during the middle of the day, has shown to play a role inincreasing the risk of cataract formation.

Cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. This disease has become one of the most frequently diagnosed diseases in individuals over 65 years of age. This accounts for the increase in the amount of Medicare dollars being spent on Cataract surgery per year.

Exposure to sunlight over a lifetime may cause cataract disease and eventually blindness. Avoiding sunlight during the day when sunlight is at it’s highest, may reduce the prevalence of cataracts. This simple, preventative measure may stop the elderly from going blind due to cataract formation.
