Macular Degeneration: How is it treated?

The treatment of macular degeneration is still somewhat controversial. Laser can be used in some cases, but not all. Because laser destroys tissue, it cannot be used too close to the macula.

Current therapy for macular degeneration more often includes taking vitamins. Vitamins A, C, E, and zinc are believed to be particularly helpful. In addition, there are numerous “eye vitamins” now on the market. Ask your eyecare physician about them. If you already take a multivitamin and plan to add one of these “eye vitamins,” discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist, because it is possible to take too much of certain vitamins.

A patient with macular degeneration is often asked to help monitor the condition. This is done by evaluating your vision yourself, at home, using a grid. While looking at the dot in the center of the grid, you must notice if the whole grid is visible, if any of the lines appear distorted or broken, and if any areas of the grid are blocked out. As long as the appearance of the grid remains the same, your doctor will probably want to see you every 6 months or so. However, if you ever notice any new changes in the way the grid looks, you should notify your physician at once.
