What Is Pink Eye?

The conjunctiva is the thin, slippery membrane that covers the white (sclera) of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. Viral conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva caused by a virus. It is characterized by itchy, watery, slightly-red eyes and is commonly referred to as pink eye.

Viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious. Symptoms usually appear seven to ten days after you come in contact with someone who has it. You may also experience swollen lymph nodes in front of your ears or below the rim of your jaw.

Avoid excessive contact with someone who currently has pink eye. Dont share bath towels, washcloths, or pillowcases. Wash your hands thoroughly if you touch a tissue or other object handled by someone who has it. Avoid touching your eyes. A child with pink eye should not return to school until all symptoms are gone.

Like the common cold, viral conjunctivitis usually has a long course and can last for weeks. Treatment is similar to treatment for a cold: rest; drink plenty of fluids; aspirin or Tylenol for discomfort; and antihistamines. Cold compresses can help reduce eyelid puffiness. Your eye doctor may also prescribe antihistamine eye drops.
